ABOUT THE BOOK
This book covers a subject on a way of leading and working that I am extremely passionate about, and I’m excited to finally share it with you. The idea of The Oross Effect is and has always been a big part of who I am and I believe it’s brought me to where I am today – from my early days in the South African Police Service (SAPS) to building my own major maintenance and technical services company, and now being a co-founder and CEO (chief ecosystem officer) of a global organization (CG Tech) that operates across a variety of industries.
They say one person can make all the difference and move organizations. The Oross Effect will show you how that person can be you, and how you can apply it to different areas of your life – or in the context of this book, the workplace. I hope that The Oross Effect will impact your professional success as it continues to impact mine and inspire you to create a company culture where employees, communities, and your company can thrive. This book is a manifesto on how just one person – or a few people – can steer the culture of an entire organization, for better or for worse. The goal of this manifesto is to inspire you and provide a practical step-by-step guide – something that can sit by you on the desk as you develop and implement your own Oross.
Part One of this book explains what Oross is and what it can do. I also go through to define and redefine commonly misused terms such as purpose, vision, values and culture, but perhaps the most important word we’ll look at is the meaning of an ‘ecosystem’. There’s a distinct difference between being a chief executive officer, and a chief ecosystem officer. What retired army general Stanley McCrystal calls ‘Team of Teams’, we are a ‘company of companies’ – the entire ecosystem in and around our leadership and organization. It’s a concept I’ll explore together with you later in this book.
In Part Two, we’ll move onto the more practical and state examples of The Oross Effect in action. Throughout the book, I have included lessons and case studies from my personal and professional life over the last 25 years. Although I have worked in some of the most interesting and challenging situations and regions, my experience is far from exhaustive. Sometimes it just helps to have different perspectives. I’m honoured to include insights from the market as well as case studies that set the bar for strong (and weak) Oross.
In all cases, you will begin to understand and see the Oross Effect in action and get a roadmap for how to apply it in your own organization. In Part Three of this book, we look at the ways you can effectively pass your Oross on, paying particular attention to developing your sermon, symbols, and rituals. Here we also delve into the importance of Oross in a time of crisis, using the recent Covid-19 pandemic as an illustration of how challenges can be reframed to provide opportunities for growth and cultural cohesion.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jason English is a mechanical engineer with a master’s in business administration (MBA), who served in the South African Police Force and worked for a global oil and gas corporation before becoming an entrepreneur. He scaled a small office into a multi-national group employing more than 5,000 people across South Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
Recognising the challenges of scaling culture in growing organisations, he coined the title chief ecosystem officer in 2018. A member of Abundance 360 and YPO (Young Presidents’ Organisation), English has facilitated strategic planning workshops for more than 100 global CEOs. He frequently speaks at international conferences and has been featured in numerous magazines. In 2021 he won the Technology Leader of the Year Award for revitalising a Middle Eastern construction business through digital technology adoption.
